Fast forward to today, and the advancement in extraction technology has led to the development of highly potent and pure cannabis extracts. Modern extraction methods, such as CO2 extraction and ethanol extraction, use solvents to extract the active compounds from the plant material, resulting in a concentrated form of the extract. This has led to the development of various forms of extracts, such as oil, tincture, wax, shatter, and others, each with their own unique properties and effects. What Exactly Is A Cannabis Extract?
A cannabis extract is a concentrated form of the active compounds found in the Cannabis plant, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). It is typically produced by using a solvent, such as ethanol or CO2, to extract the desirable compounds from the plant material.
The resulting product is a highly concentrated and potent substance that is used for both recreational and medicinal purposes. Cannabis extracts can come in various forms, such as oil, tinctures, wax, shatter, and others, and their classification as a cannabis extract is based on the method of extraction and the concentration of the active compounds present in the final product.
Ideal Temperatures for Each Extract
When it comes to the ideal temperature for extract consumption, it depends on the method of consumption and on whether a user prefers to activate their terpenes or not.
Dabbing
Using a dab rig to consume cannabis extracts is one of the most common forms of consumption in today’s cannabis community. Dabbing is the process of heating a glass or metal bowl, sometimes referred to as a banger, at high temperatures using a butane torch or electronics. The high temperatures created are ideal for consuming wax, shatter, and rosin; however, dabbing is not a heat-and-go situation.
When dabbing, the temperature used to consume the extract can make all the difference. Low-temperature dabbing takes place at 375°F-500°F. This method does not vaporize the concentrate as quickly, but it does allow for a more broad spectrum experience as terpenes are activated and not simply burned off. Low temperature dabbing does require more intense cleanup as the extract may leave residue as a result of the lower temperatures.
High-temperature dabbing finds temperatures of 550°F-900°F. This method will not retain any of the terpene flavors but will produce a faster, heavier high than low temperature dabbing. Consumers who use this method should be careful not to surpass temperatures above 900°F, as this will begin to burn the concentrate and expose the user to harmful chemicals.
Lighting a Bowl
Hash is the main extract that can be used with traditional smoking methods. Consumers can easily top a bowl or pack a joint with hash to create a heavier THC experience. Consumers using this method will have to light their flower and hash mixture for slightly longer to get the hash to fully heat up and turn into smoke. While using a lighter will not give a direct temperature measurement, the ideal optimal temperature for consuming hash and flower is around 375°.
Cannabis Vape Pen
One of the most common ways to consume cannabis extracts is with a vape pen and cartridge. Most cartridges are filled with either distillate, resin, rosin, or wax. The temperature range for vaporizing cannabis concentrates in a vape device can vary depending on the battery capability and type of concentrate being used. Generally, the temperature range for vape batteries is between 250°F and 450°F.
Much like dabbing, the temperature of the vape will have different effects on the vaping experience. At lower temperatures, the vapor produced will contain more flavorful and aromatic compounds, while at higher temperatures, the vapor will contain more of the psychoactive compounds responsible for the "high."
The “Right” Temperature
Overall, it's important to note that temperature control is an important factor in ensuring a safe and enjoyable cannabis experience. Vaporizing or dabbing at too high of a temperature can result in harsh, unpleasant vapor, and may also cause the release of harmful chemicals. On the other hand, vaporizing at too low of a temperature may not effectively vaporize the concentrates, leading to ineffective or disappointing results.
